loud silence (2022) for two violins and viola

from three chamber works by david toub

/

about

loud silence is written for two violins and a viola rather than a string quartet. The way the work developed, there was no need for a cellist, and the work is much sparser and quieter as a result. The entire 20-minute work is entirely performed pppp with mutes (con sordino) and all bowing done over the fingerboard (sul tasto/sulla tastiera). Much of the work consists of string harmonics. There are also intermittent silences. Rhythmically, it is often quite complicated, but that is a result of the work having been mostly conceived as an improvisation on 3/4/22 and the rhythms reflect this. Additionally, during the composition process I hit a wrong note on the synthesizer and liked it better than what I had originally intended, so that note (a string harmonic using the interval of a third rather than a fourth) was retained in the piece.
